August’s rainfall was generally below average over most of the Geelong-Otways Region. Over the urban area the totals were about 68% of the long-term average, and in the Otways catchment the proportion was around the same. There were some pockets of heavier falls, notably at Bellbrae, Paraparap, Teesdale and St Leonards.
The average temperatures were very close to the long-term average. Minimum averaged 5.3 degrees (compared to 5.6) and maximum averaged 15.2 (compared to 15.2). The lowest overnight temperature in Geelong was -1.2 on the 26th and snow fell in the Otways near Beech Forest on the 12th when Geelong’s maximum only reached 10.8. Seven frosts were recorded at Teesdale
Although El Nino looks set to continue there are some signs that good spring rains might be experienced shortly in the region.
