RAINFALL
Almost without exception the Geelong region recorded higher than average falls in November. These have brought the spring rainfall totals also above average. In the Geelong urban area, falls ranged from 53.5 mm at Lara to 75 mm at Belmont. Lowest in the district was Drysdale with 44 mm, while Meredith (Darra) recorded 121 mm. Good falls in the Otways catchment (107 mm at Forrest) has meant the West Barwon Dam continues to rise and is now just below half full.
TEMPERATURES
November was cooler than normal, with an average minimum of 8.7 degrees (10.2 is normal) and average maximum of 19.6 (21.2 is normal). Overall it was around 1.5 degrees cooler than normal, and this was mainly due to the larger number of cloudy days.
STORMS
No major thunderstorms were experienced over Geelong in November, although some “thundery showers” occurred over the northern suburbs on the 14th.
OTHER PHENOMENA
Minor flooding of the Barwon River occurred on the 16th after constant rains for four days occurred in the upper Otways catchment. Breakwater Road was closed for one day and the river reached 2.5 metres above sea level at the Macintyre Bridge.
