April 2016

TEMPERATURE

April was very warm: around 2 degrees C warmer than the latest 30-year average which made the mean monthly temperature 17.1 degrees, 2.0 C higher than the 15.1 C mean.  It was the second warmest April on record since 1903.  1968 was the warmest with a mean of 17.5 C.

Geelong’s highest temperature was 31.7 C on the 5th and there were two days over 30 C.  The warmest overnight temperature occurred on the 28th with a reading of 19.9 degrees just before the 9 am cutoff.

In a very stable month Geelong had no strong wind gusts over 60 kph, no storms or thunder days and no other noteworthy incidents apart from those mentioned.

RAINFALL

Rainfall was very disappointing with only 23.4 mm falling at Breakwater.  Rain fell on 8 days and most was measured on the 22nd (6.4 mm) and the 30th (7.8 mm).  Most areas in the region only recorded around 50 % of the normal 30-year average for the month.

Water supplies are now down to only 32 %, but these are now being augmented by aquifer harvesting and some Melbourne pipeline supplies.  The latest outlook is for slightly enhanced rainfall over the May to July period and this seems likely with the current demise of El Nino.
