July 2016

RAINFALL

Well above average rainfall fell right across the Geelong region in July.  The Geelong urban area had around 86 mm for the month which is almost double the latest 30-year average.

Mt Sabine received a staggering 358.2 mm, while lowest in the region was Melbourne with only 64.2 mm and Leopold 67.0 although both were still above average.

Some minor flash flooding occurred on the 13th-14th despite the highest 24-hour fall of 19 mm on the 6th.

Consequently the water catchments have now grown to 47 % of capacity.

TEMPERATURE

Believe it or not; Geelong’s average daily temperature for July was around 0.9 degree higher than the latest 30-year normal.  Average daily minimum was 7.1 degrees C  (mean 5.7 C) and maximums averaged 14.4 C (mean 14.0 C).

The coldest minimum overnight was 0.2 C on the 17th.  This was the only frost.  Warmest night was the 19th (12.1 C).  On the coldest day (26th) the temperature only rose to 10.8 C but on the mildest day (18th) it rose to 19.4 C.

 OTHER FEATURES

There were six very windy days; on the 12th the maximum gust of 100 kph was recorded at Breakwater, but at Point Wilson 113 kph was measured.  Other high gusts that day included Avalon (95 kph) and Queens Park (93 kph).

Snow fell in the Ballarat, Lavers Hill and Beech Forest areas on the 13th, and on the same day there was some severe storm damage to house roofs and trees in Geelong.
