October 2016

RAINFALL

Another month of above average rainfall was the result of October’s 15 rain days.  Breakwater had 62 mm and the urban area averaged around 68 mm compared to the 30-year mean of 52.3 mm.

This was Geelong’s sixth consecutive above-average rainfall month, a notable result.  With only two months to go until the end of the year Geelong’s accumulated rainfall is now over 570 mm, well above the total annual average figure of 520 mm.

TEMPERATURES

October was only fractionally colder than normal, despite what everyone seems to be saying.  Nights were 0.2 C warmer than the 30-year average (8.4 C) and days were 0.6 C cooler, making the mean temperature cooler by 0.2 C.

The coldest night dropped to 3.4 C on the 14th and on the coldest day – the 22nd – the mercury only rose to 13.7 C.  At night-times the warmest temperature was 15.3 C on the 16th and the warmest daytime temperature reached 26.6 C on the 25th.

OTHER FEATURES

There were nine very windy days with gusts above 60 kph.

There was one severe wind storm causing roof and tree damage on the 9th when Avalon recorded a gust of 106 kph, Queens Park 95 kph and Breakwater 80 kph.

Hail squalls occurred on the 5th, 10th and18th and there was minor Barwon flooding on the 23rd.

Quite amazingly, there was light snow (see photo) at Beech Forest on the morning of the 31st after a strong cold front traversed southern Victoria.

Despite the diverse activity no important records were created and the Barwon catchment stands at 85% of capacity.
