RAINFALL

Most areas surrounding Geelong had above average falls in January, owing mainly to several thunderstorms. However Geelong’s southern suburbs generally did not benefit from those and only ended up with around 30mm, a strange anomaly in the midst of higher falls. In spite of this, relative humidity remained very high on several non-rain days. There were 2 thunder days, and a severe thunderstorm occurred across the northern suburbs from Corio to Lara, moving across the bay to Curlewis on the 21st causing flash flooding and large marble-sized hail in a number of places. During this storm Belmont only received 1.5mm.There were 5 windy days on which gusts exceeded 60kph, including 76kph on the 22nd. Water storages are on 39% of capacity.

TEMPERATURE

Daily minimum temperatures were 0.9 degree above average (14.5 compared to 13.6) and maximums were 0.1 degree below (25.1 cf 25.2), making the month overall 0.4 degree warmer than the long-term average for the tenth month in succession. There weree 5 days over 30 degrees, including 2 over 40. The hottest day was the 22nd when the maximum reached 43.7 degrees. The warmest night occurred in the early hours of the 27th when the minimum was 22.4.
