RAINFALL
In contrast to last February’s massive downpours the Geelong district has just completed a very poor rainfall month, with only around half of the average. Geelong received around 20mm for the month, only half of the average 37mm, with Belmont only receiving 16mm and Avalon 28mm. The total rain for the summer months has only been around 80% of normal, and consequently our water storages are in a precarious position holding only 35% of capacity.Even the heavy thunderstorms around Melbourne around the 26th bypassed Geelong almost totally. There were no severe storms, 1 thunder day (26th) and only 3 days of strong wind gusts over 60kph.TEMPERATURES and OTHER FEATURES
Despite the month of generally benign conditions, our temperatures were below normal. Daily average maximums averaged 23.8 (1.8 degrees below normal) and minimums averaged 13.1 (1.0 below normal). This means February was 1.4 degrees below normal in Geelong, making this the first month since last March when the monthly temperature was cooler than the long-term normal.There were only 3 days of over-30 degree maximums (the February average is 6), and the highest was 38.3 degrees on the 24th. No records were created.
