RAINFALL
Due to the fact that the Bureau of Meteorology rain gauge is situated at Mt Duneed, Geelong recorded 70.4 mm in May. However, on 1st May, when Mt Duneed received 38mm, Bellbrae 42mm and Mt Duneed West 57mm, most of urban Geelong only had between 5mm and 20mm, bringing the monthly total to around 50 mm compared to the average 48 mm. Northern areas around Avalon, Lara and Corio recorded 25-30 mm but southern suburbs generally reached the average. Overall however this autumn has been drier than normal by between 20-35 mm across the district. Otway catchment areas were generally below average and water levels are still hovering around 26% of capacity despite the resumption of underground pumping. Geelong’s water supplies for the rest of the year as well as soil moisture levels now appear to be facing severe threats unless winter falls are torrential and continuous.
TEMPERATURE
Temperatures were 1.0 degree C lower than normal. The warmest day was the 2nd (19.6C) and the coldest day was the 22nd (12.4 C). Coldest overnight temperatures were recorded on the 30th (2.0 C) and 31st (0.6 C). This autumn has been cooler than the long-term average by 0.7 degrees, after a warmer March.
OTHER FEATURES
Widespread fogs occurred on 2 days (17th and 23rd) and windy days where gusts exceeded 60 kph occurred only 3 times, with the maximum 74 kph on the 7th. Two frosts occurred on the 30th and 31st.
