TEMPERATURE

Fractionally warmer than the latest 30-year normals, Geelong had an average daily maximum of 14.8 degrees C and average daily minimum of 6.3 degrees c, or 0.1 degrees above normal in August.

The lowest minimum was 0.7 degrees on the 2nd and the highest maximum was 20.4 C on the 14th.

There were three minimums below 3 degrees and 2 days above 20 degrees.

RAINFALL

Rainfall was above average over most of the urban area and surrounding districts with an average of 52 mm.  The latest 30-year average is 45.4 mm.  There were 21 rain days.

These figures were unexpected by the Bureau of Meteorology whose 3-monthly outlooks are not to be relied upon.

Water supply catchments are now around 68% of capacity, still better than at the same time last year, but with a lower chance of above average falls in the next three months.

 OTHER FEATURES

There were three consecutive days of frost, from the 1st to the 3rd, and the lowest minimum reached 0.7 degrees C on the 2nd.  On two of those days there were fogs and on the 3rd the fog lasted all day with a maximum of only 8.7 C, the lowest maximum since 2005.

In the middle of the month there were four very windy days between the 11th and the 17th, and the maximum gusts reached 80 km/h on the 16th.  On that day Avalon had a gust of 102 km/h.

In a month of contrasts there was one thunder/lightning day on the 23rd with flash flooding reported at Leopold and light hail in various suburbs on the 27th.
