SUMMARY
Geelong in July was warmer than the 30-year average by about 1.1 degrees C and drier by around 13 mm, according to Geelong Weather Services.
TEMPERATURE
Minimum temperatures averaged 7.3 C (1.5 C above average) and maximums averaged 14.6 C (0.6 C above average). These figures produce a 1.1 degree above average anomaly, leading to the above conclusion.
On the warmest day, the 6th, the mercury rose to 18.0 C and on the coldest, the 30th, the maximum was only 11.5 C. The lowest temperature of 3.5 C on the 28th was well above normal July conditions and this accounts for Geelong having the equal third warmest July on record as well as the highest average minimum since records began in 1903.
RAINFALL
Rain fell on 18 days but the city and suburbs only averaged around 30 mm for the month. The only noticeable local pattern showed lower falls to Geelong’s north and west and higher falls elsewhere. Overall almost the whole region received lower-than-average rainfall, except for places in the Otway Ranges such as Beech Forest which recorded 258 mm.
OTHER FEATURES
The photo above was provided by BAY-FM of an early fog in Moorabool Street, facing southwards on the 5th. There were several thick fogs but most only lasted during the morning.
A major feature of the month was the extremely windy gusts that occurred between the 10th and the 14th and again on the 23rd. There were five such windy days with gusts exceeding 60 km/h, including the 10th which recorded 76 km/h at Breakwater. Surrounding places and suburbs had some higher readings, and on this particular day some roof and tree damage occurred but nothing to warrant a severe storm.
