SUMMARY
Geelong was warmer than the latest 30-year average by 1.1 degrees C; daily maximums averaged 21.1 C and minimums averaged 8.8 C. Rainfall was only around half of the expected normal for the month; 24 mm compared to 50.8 mm in the Geelong urban area.
TEMPERATURE
Daily maximums and minimums both averaged above the expected figures. There were three days with figures over 30 C, including 34.4 C on the 24th. The coldest day was 14.1 C on the 8th.
The coldest overnight minimum was 2.2 C on the 1st and the warmest overnight figure was 14.9 C on the 25th.
RAINFALL
Only around half of Geelong’s average October rainfall eventuated. This very poor figure was a direct result of a positive Indian Ocean Dipole which saw cooler Indian Ocean sea temperatures near the west Australian coast incapable of providing sufficient moisture to condense and form northwest cloud bands which in better years would be responsible for more rainfall over Victoria.
As a consequence urban Geelong only had 24 mm of rain spread over 14 rain days.
OTHER FEATURES
There were five days of very strong wind gusts at Breakwater, including the top of 76 km/h on the 6th. There was only one thunder-lightning day on the 17th and there were no storms.
