RAINFALL
Very pleasing above average rainfalls were received across most of the region. Most of the urban area recorded over 50 mm (BoM average 49.7). Some areas such as Inverleigh (43 mm), Lara (30 mm) and Clifton Springs (41 mm) were slightly below average. The Otways Catchment received 140 mm at West Barwon Dam and 170 mm at Mt Sabine. Water resources have now grown to 87 % of capacity.
TEMPERATURE
This has been Geelong’s equal warmest September on record with a mean temperature of 13.9 C. Daily maximums averaged 18.8 degrees C (BoM average 16.5) and minimums 9.0 C (BoM average 6.6). Surprisingly, the warmest day was the 1st, with 25.1 C, and the lowest overnight temperature dropped to 3.4 C on the 13th. Warmest overnight temperature was 14.5 C on the 5th. None of these figures is an extreme.September, 1928, was Geelong’s other warmest September. Average daily maximum in that month was 19.2 degrees and average daily minimumwas 8.5 degrees, giving a mean temperature of 13.9C. Long-term (1903-2012) Bureau of Meteorology mean for September is 11.9 C.
Geelong’s September temperatures have shown a very slight increase since 1903, due mainly to the Urban Heat Island effectwhich increases as the urban area grows larger. In the last 30 years however the increase has been only fractional without anydiscernible trend. This of course is comparable with the overall world temperature recorded by satellite since 1979, which showsthere has been no statistically significant warming at all in the lower atmosphere.
Despite Geelong’s warm September this year the world continues to show no increase in warming since the El Nino of 1998, even though carbon dioxide emissions keep rising. See: http://www.drroyspencer.com/latest-global-temperatures
At the moment even NOAA and the IPCC have admitted there has been a 15-year pause, despite IPCC’s continued alarmistreporting.
OTHER FEATURES
True to form, September was windy and on 5 days gusts exceeded 60 kph at Breakwater, the maximum being 76 kph on the 26th as a vigorous low pressure system passed to our south. Avalon received a gust of 102 kph on that day.
Although minor damage was reported around Geelong this did not qualify as a severe storm.
There were 2 days on which thunder and lightning were noticed, and small hail fell on the 26th in some suburbs.
