SUMMARY
A much wetter month clearly showed the latest La Nina effect across the whole Geelong Region with most centres recording 150% of normal rainfall averages. Temperatures were about 0.3 C higher than the 30-year averages.
TEMPERATURE
The Geelong urban area produced a 1.3 C above average and a 0.8 C below average for October. This combination resulted in a temperature 0.3 C above average.
The warmest day reached 29.8 C on the 3rd and the lowest 12.4 C on the 6th. The warmest minimum figure reached 18.1 C on the 3rd and the coolest minimum only reached 4.4 C on the 12th.
RAINFALL
Urban Geelong recorded about 84.0 mm for the month. With the Geelong 30-year average amounting to 49 mm one can clearly see the excessive falls which occurred locally, without flooding occurring.
On the wettest day 20.8 mm fell by 9 am on the 24th. The Barwon catchment ended the month with an 83 % capacity.
OTHER FEATURES
The first 9 days of October were a very windy period, with 3 occasions exceeding gusts of 67 km/h winds at Breakwater and several lower figures in the rest of the month. Wind gusts occurred at Avalon Airport on the 3rd, 8th and 9th at 72 km/h, 70 km/h and 65 km/h.
