TEMPERATURE
August was a warmer month than average by about 0.9 degrees C. Average maximum was 15.6 C above the latest 30-year average of 15.1 C and average minimum was 7.4 C above the average of 6.0 C.
The warmest day was 20.1 C on the 28th and the coldest day reached 11.9 C on the 24th. The warmest night reached 12.0 C on the 29th and the coldest night reached 1.5 C on both the 9th and 10th.
RAINFALL
Geelong’s rainfall reached 56.4 mm which was well above the average 46.1 mm, the latest 30-year August average. The wettest reading was 18.6 mm on the 13th. Most surrounding areas also received above average figures. See details below.
OTHER FEATURES
Strong wind gusts of 60 km/h became more common this month than in many previous months. In most of August there were six strong wind days which exceeded 60 km/h at Avalon, and two such days at Geelong. The maximum gust at Geelong was 72 km/h on the 3rd, and on that day the suburbs of Queens Park also experienced 68, Connewarre 76 and Armstrong Creek 62 km/h.
There were two thunder – lightning days on the 13th and the 29th with both areas close to Lara and Grovedale occurring. Snow flurries around Ballarat occurred on the 23rd.

Warmest maximum: 20.1° on 28th August.
Coldest minimum: -0.4° on 21st and 30th July.
Wettest day: 18.6 mm on 13th August.
Windiest day: 72 km/h on 3rd August.
Summary: Geelong was wetter (by 14 mm) and warmer (by 0.25 C) than an average winter. Long-term averages of 138 mm and 10.3° respectively.
