RAINFALL
Despite the official recent death notices for El Nino, its effect lives on around Geelong. In February we only received between 12 and 26mm despite the long term average being 36mm. The Otways catchment fared well with 88mm at West Barwon (average 44) after a similarly wet January, however the catchments still only contain 18.5% of capacity.
Rain fell on only 5 days in Geelong and there were several localised thunderstorms, but thunder was heard on 5 days.
TEMPERATURES and OTHER FEATURES
Higher temperatures in February resulted in the month being approximately 1.6 degrees C above the long-term average. There were 7 days over 30 degrees and the maximum reached was 39.5 on the 18th.
Wind speeds were not excessive during the month. There were 2 days on which gusts exceeded 60 kph – the 11th and the 18th.
