October 2005

RAINFALL

A disappointing rainfall month for Geelong saw an average of only 40mm deposited on the urban area, about two thirds of the normal for October. Rain fell on just 13 days, but there were large regional variations: the area from Colac down to Anglesea was more fortunate with above average falls, but both the Otways and Moorabool catchments only recorded around 80% of normal. Several heavy thunderstorm systems closely missed the urban area in the fourth week. Geelong’s water supplies have now dropped to 53%, a serious position to be in just before summer.

TEMPERATURES

The final few days of the month were responsible for a slightly above average month by 0.3 degrees. Average daily minimum was 8.6 degrees compared to 8.5, the long-term mean, and maximums averaged 19.5 degrees, compared to the long-term mean of 19.0. The highest temperature was 23.3 degrees on the 23rd, and the lowest overnight temperature was 2.5 on the 15th.

OTHER FEATURES

There were 6 very windy days when maximum gusts exceeded 60 kph, including gusts over 80kph on the 26th, which caused some structural damage. There were 2 thunder days (21st and 23rd) on which the dominant feature were brilliant lightning displays but little else. Funnel clouds were photographed on the 21st over the Bellbrae district but no rotation or ground contact was observed. Hail to golf ball size fell at Inverleigh on the 23rd, and 25mm of rain fell within half an hour at Moriac on the afternoon of the 25th.
