RAINFALL
“A most unremarkable month,” is how Lindsay Smail, Director of Geelong Weather Services has described the region’s May rainfall. Across the urban area falls were around 30% of normal, while some places to do better were the Bellarine Peninsula and the Winchelsea District. However the Otways and Moorabool catchments were both down, around 50% and 25% respectively. Despite the disappointment, most district farmers are not complaining owing to the continuing benefits of last month’s phenomenal falls.
TEMPERATURE
Geelong was cooler in May than normal. The monthly average maximum this May was 16.3 degrees compared with the long-term average of 17.2, and the minimum average was 7.6 compared with 8.1. This means that, overall, Geelong was 0.7 degrees cooler than normal.
OTHER FEATURES
About the only item of any interest was the appearance of several waterspouts close to the shore at Lorne on May 6. Kevin Flynn was fishing nearby and photographed one of the waterspouts which dissipated as it approached the township from the south.
