RAINFALL
April was above average for rain in the Geelong urban area. Totals across the city were remarkably even, mostly within a few millimetres of 45. The Geelong average for April is 42 mm. On the Bellarine Peninsula, Queenscliff received 50.8 mm and Drysdale 52.5, but Connewarre only registered 29.7. Forrest, site of the West Barwon Dam, recorded 81.8 mm, below its 92.4 April average, and west of Geelong the areas around Winchelsea and Inverleigh were also slightly below average, although Colac, Paraparap and Sheoaks were all above normal.
TEMPERATURE
April 2000 was warmer than normal around Geelong. The highest daily maximum was 28 degrees on the 9th and the coldest night reached 5 degrees on the 26th. Average daily maximum for April is 20.3 degrees compared to 21.2 which was last month’s figure.
OTHER
A couple of unseasonal thunderstorms were experienced on the 15th and 16th, but these generally created only light rainfalls over the Bellarine Peninsula, although a cloudburst over East Geelong deposited 8.5 mm in five minutes. Raised dust areas to the west of Geelong were noticeable on the 29th, with near gale-force northerlies gusting up to 55 kph at St Albans Park.
