RAINFALL
October’s rainfall in Geelong and the whole region including the Bellarine and the Otway Ranges was depressingly low. Only around 30-50% of the 30-year average fell in most areas and the predictions of a dry spring are now very obviously coming to fruition.
The Otway and Moorabool water supplies are still showing 80% of capacity and there is no immediate danger in that regard.
TEMPERATURES
October was also a very warm month. Overall it was Geelong’s third warmest on record, with a monthly mean of 15.6 C compared with the 30-year average of 13.7 C. 1940 still holds the record for the warmest October with a mean of 15.9 C.
This month’s top temperature was 33.8 C on the 31st, and there were 3 days over 30 degrees; the October average is 0.8 days.
OTHER FEATURES
There were 4 strong wind days with gusts over 60 kph at Breakwater, the strongest gust being 72 kph recorded on the 6th and 27th. There was one thunder-lightning day on the 27th, but only minimal rain. No severe storms were recorded and some small hail fell on the 13th.
