RAINFALL
While much of the Otways Region and Moorabool River Systems received below average falls for April, Geelong itself from Mt Duneed to Avalon, and the Bellarine Peninsula registered up to 170% of normal falls. Urban Geelong’s April average is 39.2mm; this month an average of 50mm was recorded across town: from 59mm at Whittington to 39mm at Lara. Clifton Springs had an amazinh 72mm.
TEMPERATURE
April was warmer than the long-term normal. For the first time this year, and only the second time in the last nine months, average daily temperatures exceeded the mean monthly figures. Geelong’s average minimum of 13.1 degrees was nearly 3 degrees higher than the mean of 10.2, but the daily maximums only averaged 20.1 compared with 20.3. This means that overall Geelong was 1.4 degrees warmer than normal. On two occasions the overnight minimum stayed above 17 degrees, and the coldest was 4.5C on the 20th. The warmest day was the 14th (32.6C) and on the 22nd the temperature reached 29.9C.
OTHER
There were two very windy days (1st and 23rd) when gusts exceeded 80kph at Mt Duneed, and there was one thunder day on the 29th when cold air thunderstorms crossed the region after 6.30pm.
