RAINFALL
A very timely downpour with local thunderstorms on the 26th brought Geelong’s rainfall over the August average, according to Geelong Weather Services manager, Lindsay Smail. But even this was not enough to bring the winter totals up to average, with figures being only around 75% of average. The southwest area – the Otways Region – again suffered worst owing to the limited frequency of southwesterlies off the Southern Ocean. Much of the rain originated from the northwest, and this had meant the southern flanks of the Otways and the Great Dividing Range were disadvantaged.In fact, if urban Geelong had not received thunderstorms on the 26th, it would still have been below average for the month also.
TEMPERATURES
Although many people commented on the relative warmth of August, it was only fractionally warmer with 15.2 degrees as the average maximum (compared to the normal 15.1) and 6.3 minimum (compared to 5.7). Higher relative humidity accounted for some of this.
