RAINFALL
For the fourth year in a row the Geelong region’s winter rainfall has been below average, according to Lindsay Smail of Geelong Weather Services. West and south of Geelong the drought-afflicted Otways and Golden Plains suffered once again, receiving only between 50% and 70% of a normal winter’s rainfall. The Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula, from Anglesea to St Leonards, were more favoured, with above average falls.August totals were around 35 mm in the urban area, from 25 mm at Lara to 58 mm at Leopold. However Lethbridge (21 mm) continued its dry run, and St Leonards (90 mm) was almost flooded.
TEMPERATURES
Average daily minimum and maximum temperatures were slightly cooler than normal; 5.3 compared with 5.7 degrees, and 14.8 compared with 15.1 degrees respectively. Cloudy days and active cold fronts contributed to this cooler month, but they did not generally eventuate in increased rainfall.
