RAINFALL
It was a very disappointing month for rainfall region-wide, and only the heavy downpours associated with thunderstorms on the 25th prevented most areas being much below average. Areas such as Wallington (11 mm), Connewarre (11.5 mm), Belmont (12.5 mm), Highton (13 mm), Winchelsea (14 mm), Inverleigh(14 mm) and Barwon Heads (14.5 mm) contrasted with Werribee (60 mm), Portarlington(52 mm), Corio (41 mm) and Lara (34 mm).
The drought-stricken Otways catchment only recorded 22 mm at Forrest; its average is 45 mm.
TEMPERATURES
February was the second hottest February in the nearly 100 year history of Geelong’s temperature records. The average daily maximum this year was 28.7 degrees, and the record is 28.9 set in 1983. Twelve days reached 30 degrees or higher, and cold front activity was weaker than normal.
