RAINFALL
A poor July rainfall was recorded right across the Geelong and Otways Region, according to Lindsay Smail, Director of Geelong Weather Services. “Most places received well below their long-term average,” he said, and the urban area received only about half. The water catchment areas received only around half a normal July’s rainfall, but the total system was at almost 70% capacity, he reported. Winter had been predicted to be relatively dry, and this was now eventuating, he said. However there were some signs that the month of August could produce some good rains.
TEMPERATURES
July was also warmer than normal, with daily maximum temperatures just higher than average and overnight minima warmer by almost 1.5 degrees. With June’s higher temperatures, this winter is also turning out to be warmer than normal, and this had also been predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology, Mr Smail said. Only on one occasion (the 5th) did the temperature drop below 2 degrees and create some areas of local frost. By contrast, overnight temperatures on 22 occasions were above average. Despite the higher temperatures, no records were broken.
