RAINFALL
June was a disappointing rainfall month, according to Lindsay Smail, manager of Geelong Weather Services. Much of the region only received between two-thirds and three-quarters of the normal June totals. But there were some surprising variations; from an incredible 119 mm at Apollo Bay (average 110) to a low of 21.5 mm at Lara (average 37.3).
Much of the problem has been due to the southward migration of high pressure systems, normally further north at this time of year. These have tended to direct more dry northerly airstreams across the region than is usual.
The Otways water catchment is now at a critical phase: unless very heavy rainfall is received creating above average runoff over the next four months, Geelong can look forward to continued water restrictions, and maybe worse.
TEMPERATURES
Average June temperatures closely reflected the normals. But with a recorded minimum of 1 degree at Mt Duneed on the 12th and 27th, and a maximum of 19 (on the 4th) no records were broken. Cloudy days numbered just 13, which is two less than average for June.
