RAINFALL
Well above average rainfall was received in the Otways catchment and average falls in the Moorabool, but generally below average across the urban area. The Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast generally also fared well with more than normal June tallies.
The legendary Weeaproinah, although not in the Barwon catchment, was the recipient of a phenomenal 416mm, that’s almost twice the June average. The West Barwon Dam at Forrest received 188mm, or 60mm more than normal. On the other hand, although urban Geelong averaged 40mm, this is still below the June average of 44mm, and falls ranged from 28mm at Belmont to 52mm at Mt Duneed.
As a result of the rainfall, runoff into the system was very good and the reservoirs overall have risen to around 50% of capacity – much better than last year’s 42% at the same time.
TEMPERATURES
June was slightly warmer than normal. Preliminary figures indicate that average daily minimum was 6.7 degrees compared to the long-term normal 5.9, and average maximum was 14.4, compared to the normal 14.3. The reason it probably felt cooler was the generally windier month – there were three days on which strong winds exceeded 70kph. On these days, (3rd, 14th and 19th) there was some minor damage to trees and power lines, but no widespread destruction otherwise.
OTHER FEATURES
Hail was experienced on the 25th in the northern suburbs and there was one thunder day in Geelong (9th) but no other severe storm events apart from the strong winds.
