RAINFALL
Geelong had a very poor rainfall month, the ninth such below average month out of the last ten months. Both catchment areas (Otways and Moorabool) also suffered badly and water supplies are now at a disastrously low level of 25%. Mt Duneed airport received only 16 mm compared to the average 44 mm. It was Geelong’s driest June since 1984.
TEMPERATURES
This has been Geelong’s coldest June since 1973. The average daily minimum temperature was only 4.1 degrees C compared with the long-term mean 5.9 degrees. Average maximum was 13.6 degrees, compared with 14.3. There were seven days of frost and at least two days of widespread, persistent fog. Coldest overnight temperature was -0.4 degrees C on the 20th, and the warmest day was the 22nd, when the top temperature reached 16.7 degrees.
OTHER FEATURES
Seven frosts and two fogs in June meant that the daily average temperature was suppressed effectively. Basically this has been brought about by a succession of high pressure anticyclones moving across our latitude instead of the normal course further north. This has prevented the more normal passage of regular cold fronts such as we would expect in June. Clear skies therefore brought little rain and low overnight temperatures. The stable conditions resulted in only one day of strong winds over 60kph (67kph on the 11th at Mt Duneed.)
