SUMMARY
March was slightly cooler than normal (by about 0.4 C) and wetter than the latest 30-year average by a small amount.
TEMPERATURE
Geelong’s maximum temperature ranged from a high figure of 29.7 C on the 12th and a low of 17.9 C on the 2nd. Minimum temperatures ranged from a low 6.9 C on the 30th and a high 18.8 C on the 21st. These figures were 0.3 C above average for the minimums and 1.1 C below for the maximums, resulting in a 0.4 C below average figure for the mean.
There were zero days over 30 degrees C; this was a rare occasion which has not occurred in March since 1948.
RAINFALL
Geelong’s rainfall averaged 34 mm for the month, which works out to be about 7 mm wetter than the most recent 30-year figure. This opposes the unreliable average given by the BoM to the Geelong Advertiser because the 1991 to 2020 March average as recorded by Geelong Weather Services is a mere 27 mm.
Rain only fell lightly in Geelong on 9 days (maximum 9.2 mm on the 23rd) despite heavy rain in other places from north central and most of eastern Victoria. Most places in the Geelong Region recorded totals of just above average rain.
OTHER FEATURES
On the morning of the 2nd, a minimum temperature for Geelong was not recorded because of a failure to send or receive a figure at the BoM headquarters in Melbourne. However we managed to include a patched figure of 11.2 C which was recorded by our own Davis weather station at Marshall. This situation was not perfect but at least a reasonable alternative was achieved.
No storms were recorded, no days of 30 degrees, no thunder days and no windy gusts of 60 km/h occurred in March: a very docile and uninteresting weather month.
