RAINFALL
Several large variations in rainfall totals have occurred over the Geelong region during May, according to Lindsay Smail, Director of Geelong Weather Services. Even although high totals over 170 mm were recorded in parts of the Otways, this was still about 15% short of the average. Most other districts also received below average rainfall, eg, Forrest (65%), Bannockburn (65%), Lara (68%). In spite of this general pattern, the southern suburbs of Geelong stood out in receiving above average falls, and some coastal areas such as Apollo Bay, Bellbrae and Torquay also registered above average. Urban Geelong’s May average is 47 mm; by comparison Waurn Ponds received 60 mm (128%) and Grovedale 49 mm (104%), but northern suburbs Lara and Bell Post Hill received only 27 mm and 34 mm respectively . The average across the urban area was 45 mm.
TEMPERATURE
Geelong’s temperatures for May have returned to average. Helped by the warmth of the first fortnight, average daily maximum temperatures were nearly one degree above the long-term average 17.2, but minimums were about one degree below the average 8.1. This means slightly warmer than average days and cooler than average nights for this time of year.
OTHER FEATURES
Strong winds of 82 kph at Leopold on the 16th, one thunder day (evening) on the 19th, soaking rains from the 18th to the 20th after the relatively warm, dry first half of the month were the most notable features.
