Wild appearance of skies over Geelong on the 2nd resulted in a pathetic 0.2 mm of rain despite the thunder and lightning and prediction of severe weather.

 

Rainy skies approaching Geelong on the 2nd resulted in a meagre rainfall.

SUMMARY

May was much wetter than average and fractionally cooler than average. See the details below:

TEMPERATURE

Records broken early in May:

  1.  Max temp of 26.0 C was a new record for May 1st.
  2.  Max temp of 27.8 C was a new record for May 2nd.
  3.  Record of lowest max for May 4th of 13.9 C. Hottest two days in early May ever recorded followed by the coldest 4th May. 

Minimum temperatures averaged 7.5 C compared to the 30-year normal 8.3 C, and maximums averaged 17.4 C compared to 17.2 C.  The average temperature was therefore 0.3 C cooler than normal.

Warmest day in Geelong was 27.8 C on the 2nd and the warmest night was 14.3 C on the 2nd.  The coldest day was 12.9 C on the 29th and the coldest night was 0.3 C on the 31st.  The 31st was Geelong’s only frost.

RAINFALL

Record rainfall overnight on the 4th May was 31.4 mm at Geelong and some higher suburb falls, together with highest total of 117 mm at Aireys Inlet (double total monthly average fell in one night!).

Geelong averaged 62 mm across the urban area, around 150% greater than the average 40.2 mm for the month. On the wettest day (the 4th) we recorded 31.4 mm at 9 am.  Some suburbs had much higher figures.

OTHER FEATURES

Geelong’s new records in temperature and rainfall were typical of autumn extreme weather.  There were two days of thunder-lightning (2nd and 4th) and two days of very strong wind gusts on the 15th and 26th.  The maximum gust was 78 km/h on the 26th at Breakwater AWS although there were at least two other days when wind gusts reached 59 km/h.  At Aireys Inlet 83 km/h occurred on the 25th as well.

AUTUMN DETAILS

Highest maximum temperature: 33.5 C on 3rd April.

Lowest minimum temperature: 0.3 C on 31st May.

Wettest day: 31.4 mm on 4th May.

Windiest day: 78 km/h on the 26th May.

Overall statement: Autumn was characterised  by below average temperatures and much heavier than average rainfall.
