NOVEMBER SUMMARY
Geelong was drier and warmer than average by about 0.8 degrees C. There were 4 thunder days but no severe storms and just one day with a maximum gust of 70 km/h.
TEMPERATURE
Maximum daily temperatures averaged 22.4 C (the mean is 21.4 C) and minimums averaged 11.2 C (mean is 10.4 C). This computes to an overall temperature about 0.9 C greater than the long-term average.
There were 4 days with maximums over 30 C and the highest reached was 34.2 C on the 1st and 13th. On the coldest day (23rd) the mercury only rose to 16.3 C.
On the warmest night (20th) the temperature did not drop below 20.9 C and on the coldest night (8th) the minimum reached 5.4 C.
RAINFALL
Another poor rainfall month saw the fifth consecutive month of below average rainfalls in Geelong and the Otway Ranges. Many rain bands and not a few thunderstorms passed either close to the urban area or crossed very quickly leading to a disappointing total result.
The urban area only registered an average of around 35 mm although Lara reached 57.2 mm. Despite this there were four thunder-lightning days from which the area from Lara to Melbourne recorded some heavy rains and flash flooding on the 6th and 20th. But not in Greater Geelong.
There were 12 rain days but the maximum 24-hour fall was only 7.2 mm at Breakwater on the 6th.
The Bellarine Peninsula enjoyed heavier than average rainfalls owing to the later maturing of storm patterns after crossing Geelong.

OTHER FEATURES
In a warm and relatively dry month there was only one strong wind gust (70 km/h on the 2nd) but 4 days of thunder/lightning which resulted in little rain. On the 20th lightning struck the roof of a Corio house but, apart from some damage to the house, there were no casualties.
On the 2nd, a hot day, the BoM Automatic Weather Station at Breakwater broke down between 9 am and 6 am on the 3rd due to “issues with Telstra”. During this period the top temperature reached approximately 33 degrees in Geelong but the BoM failed to include this day in their statistics. If an issue like this had occurred in Melbourne one can only imagine what would have happened. GWS has patched figures for the day in question but the Bureau is not interested in accurate substituted records, much to their own loss.
