SUMMARY

Geelong was windier, wetter and cooler than normal by around 0.4º C. Total rainfall for Geelong AWS was 53.4 mm, and the mean temperature was 15.5° compared to the 30-year average of 15.9°. A severe wind storm occurred on the 21st and wind gust details are given below.

RAINFALL

Geelong AWS’s rainfall was higher than the 30-year normal by a little over a millimeter; 53.4 mm compared to 52.2 mm. Rain fell on 12 days and 18.0 mm was recorded at 9 am on the 2nd and 12.6 mm on the 8th. Much of the region was wetter than average except for a few coastal areas. Urban Geelong however did well in general with an average total around 50 mm in most suburbs. Suburb and town figures are shown below.

OTHER FEATURES

Geelong was much windier than normal although this is not uncommon in spring. There were five days on which Geelong had gusts exceeding 60 km/h, including the maximum of 96 km/h at Breakwater in the severe storm on 21st. This figure could be increased to seven days if the threshold were reduced to 59 km/h. In the severe storm there was some local wind damage to trees and infrastructure, thunder and lightning, power disruptions, traffic chaos and the top temperature of 39.2 C during a day of Total Fire Ban. One day of light hail occurred on the 8th during another squally period.

During spring this year Geelong was warmer than the latest 30-year average by 0.3 degrees, despite November’s cooler result.

TEMPERATURE 

Geelong was around 0.4 degrees cooler than the 30-year average. Daily minimums averaged 9.7 (mean 10.4) and maximums averaged 21.4 (mean 21.4). There were 3 days over 30 degrees and the maximum of 39.2 occurred on the 21st. Minimum overnight temperature was 4.9 C on the 5th although the Bureau did not register this figure despite all evidence to the contrary. The lowest maximum was 16.4 C on the 4th and the highest minimum was 18.3 on the 1st.
