RAINFALL
October was another disappointing rainfall month for Geelong and surrounding areas, Lindsay Smail, of Geelong Weather Services said today. Average rainfall across the urban area was about 45 mm, ranging from 31 mm at Hamlyn Heights to 60 mm at Leopold South. Geelong’s average for October is 63 mm. Areas to the immediate north, west and most of the Bellarine Peninsula received below average rainfall for the month. Rain fell on the same number of days (12) as average, but the amounts registered were around 30% lower than normal.At Forrest, site of the West Barwon Reservoir, a below average total of 95 mm was registered, still 18 mm short of the October average of 113 mm. Forrest has now had only 813 mm for the last 12 months. This is 69% of average. Clearly, if Geelong had not been pumping underground water for the last 18 months the region would be in absolutely dire straits.
TEMPERATURES
October was slightly warmer than average. The average maximum was 19.9 degrees, compared with 19.1.
