September 2010

RAINFALL

Once again most of the Geelong Region experienced above-average rain in September. Geelong Airport average for September is 49.5mm and most parts ofthe urban area had around 60mm, a very pleasing result. The wider region, including the Bellarine Peninsula, Surf Coast and the Otways all sharedin above average falls. The wettest 24 hours in Geelong were recorded at 9am on the 4th, when over 20mm fell across the urban area. Catchments are now at the satisfactory level of 70%.

TEMPERATURE

And once again September in Geelong turned out colder than early predictions, the fourth month in a row. It was over half a degree cooler than theAirport average established 1992-2009. Daily minimums were 0.2 degrees above normal (6.8C compared with 6.6C) but maximums were 1.5C lower (15.2C compared with 16.7C). Highest maximum was 20.0C reached on the 9th, and the lowestovernight temperature was 1.8C on the 8th.

OTHER FEATURES

There was one frost day (8th) but no storms, although there were 5 very windy days including gusts of 91 kph and 102 kph on the 4th and 5th respectively. Rather surprisingly, only minor tree damage was reported from these conditions. A rare occurrence of sky iridescence occurred over Corio Bay on the morning of the 4th and was reported by an observer looking eastward. This is a rainbow-type phenomenon but where the ice crystals of cirro-cumulus clouds are thought to be of uniform size, although spread in patches. This is thought to cause a diffusion not seen in the more regular shape of a rainbow.
