SUMMARY
Geelong was much drier than average for September and slightly cooler than the latest 30-year average.
TEMPERATURE
Geelong’s temperatures were slightly below the average for September. Minimums were 6.7 degrees (long-term average 7.2) and maximums 17.1 C (average 17.1).
The coldest morning occurred on the 4th when the mercury dropped to 1.2 C, and the highest maximum (24.9 C) occurred on the 11th and 27th.
A number of cold fronts crossed Geelong during the month but little rain resulted.

The photo below from Geelong looking southwards towards Torquay shows Cirrus Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds around 3 pm on 17th Sept. The British MetOffice describes these clouds as:
“An extremely rare phenomenon where a cloud produces a billowing wave pattern. They occur when there is a strong vertical shear between two air streams causing winds to blow faster at the upper level than at the lower levels.”

RAINFALL
Only 21.6 mm fell for the month at Breakwater, and the suburban areas received between 10 mm and 26 mm compared to the long-term average of 51.1 mm. This result was within the lowest 10% of all recorded falls since 1871. The Bellarine Peninsula and virtually all of southwestern Victoria experienced low rainfalls. On Geelong’s wettest 24-hour period to 9 am we only recorded 4.4 mm on the 29th.
OTHER FEATURES
On two occasions wind gusts reached 72 km/h at Breakwater, much fewer than recent months. There were no storms, one frost (1.2 C on the 4th) and one hail event in Torquay on the 19th.
