RAINFALL
Most of the Geelong-Otways-Bellarine region recorded well above average rain for November, the fourth consecutive month. Urban Geelong had an average of nearly 100 mm across the suburbs, (1992-2009 average 49 mm) on a par with November 2007 with 100 mm. Spring totals were well above the average 150 mm, (around 266 mm) with 2010 being our sixth wettest spring since records began in 1876. Even in a La Nina year this result is by no means guaranteed in this region, but the frequency of good rain-bearing systems has undoubtedly been the cause.
On at least three occasions totals of over 20 mm in a 24-hour period fell in Geelong this November. There were two thunder-lightning days but no severe storms although some relatively minor flash flooding was reported in some suburbs.
Although some of the Otways received below average falls and runoff, the total capacity of Geelong’s water supplies is over 73%. This is an excellent position to be in before summer, and most outlooks support a continued good rainfall period through to autumn 2011.
TEMPERATURES
Geelong was spot on the 1992-2009 average at Geelong weather station, owing largely to a run of warmer nights in the final week. Maximums averaged 20.1 degrees C and minimums 10.1 degrees C, compared to the long-term raw figures of 20.7 C and 9.5 C respectively. November’s mean temperature was therefore 15.1 degrees C, right on average.
There were two days over 30 degrees with 31.9C on the 23rd and 31.0C on the 12th being the hottest. Overnight temperatures were pushed up in the final week of the month with eight consecutive minimums over 12.0 degrees. Highest minimum was 17.3 degrees on the 24th. The coldest night was the 1st (4.5C).
It was Geelong’s coldest spring since 2003, with the lowest daily maximum average (18.0 degrees) since that year. The overall spring mean temperature for Geelong was 13.05 degrees, this being 0.2 degrees below the 1992-2009 average at Geelong Airport.
OTHER FEATURES
There were two thunder days (24th and 26th) and one strong wind gust of 61 kph on the 28th.
