RAINFALL
Most areas received below average rainfall for December. The average across the urban area was 33mm, ranging from 21mm at Hamlyn Heights to 50mm at Mt Duneed West. Rain fell on around 11 days and the heaviest falls were recorded at 9am on the 7th, associated with local thunderstorms.
TEMPERATURE and OTHER FEATURES
Geelong was 2.3 degrees hotter and twice as windy as normal for December. While the average daily minimum was 11.0 degrees (1.0 below normal) the average daily maximum was 26.5 degrees (3.3 degrees above normal). There were ten days on which the temperature exceeded 30 degrees. The average for December is only 4.5. The hottest days was 36.9 degrees on the 30th, and the warmest night was that of the 20th-21st when the minimum reached 17.5 degrees. An interesting feature was that, at midnight on New Year’s Eve, the temperature in parts of the Otways, in particular Lavers Hill, was an unprecedented 30 degrees, due to strong northerlies just prior to a cold front which brought 15mm to the town on the next day.
It was also a windy month, with 12 days recording gusts over 60kph at Mt Duneed. The strongest gusts reached 96kph on the 4th and 85kph on the 15th and 25th.
There were 4 thunder days but no severe storms in the urban area, despite some wind damage on the 4th and 15th.
