RAINFALL

Another very poor rainfall month has closed the year with an aggregate of around 70-75% of normal rainfall for the Geelong Region. In December Geelong’s urban area rainfall was 25 mm, just over half the 30-year average of 44 mm.  A large area from the Great Dividing Range southwards to the Otways Coast averaged less than half the normal December figure.

TEMPERATURE

December was the hottest on record since 1902.  Minimums averaged 13.3 degrees C and maximums were 26.9 degrees;  the result was a mean monthly temperature 2.6 degrees above the latest 30-year averages.

The top temperature was 44.4 degrees C, reached on the 19th, the hottest December day on record, and there were 8 days over 30 degrees C.  The normal for December is 4 or 5 days.

OTHER FEATURES

Thunder days: one on 19th around Otways – Torquay areas.

High wind gust days:  three – max 70 kph on 20th at Breakwater.

Main bush and grass fire outbreaks:  Elaine and Buninyong area fires on 20th – minor damage; Lorne – Wye River area fires from 25th – major property damage, no casualties.
