June 2009

RAINFALL

Geelong’s six-monthly rainfall from January to June this year rivals last year’s disastrous result. With just 30 mm recorded in the urban area Geelong has had only around 50% of its 6-monthly average of 240mm, namely 123 mm. This is the second worst start to a rainfall year since 1967, when only 98mm was received. Last year, 2008, was our second driest January to June, with a total of 116 mm.

Otway catchment areas have performed little better and are maintaining only an 18% capacity. Maybe the decision to fluoride Geelong’s water supply has been made with the aim of reducing our consumption so as to improve the figures!

Geelong’s rain in June varied from 22 mm in the City Centre to just on 50 mm at Leopold East.

TEMPERATURES

Geelong was about half a degree C colder than normal in June.

Our warmest (and windiest) day was the 30th (20.3 degrees) and our coldest was the 17th (9.8). Maximums averaged 14.5 degrees and minimums 5.2 degrees. These compare with the long term averages of 14.5 and 6.2 degrees respectively as published by the Bureau of Meteorology. The lowest overnight minimum was 0.5 degrees on the 17th and 19th, and the highest minimum was 12.4C on the 30th. The high temperatures and windy conditions on the last day of the month preceded a strong cold front which only brought a small amount of rain. There were 4 frosts and several fogs.

OTHER FEATURES

There were two windy days with gusts over 60 kph at Mt Duneed. The strongest gust, with only a little damage, occurred on the 30th (91 kph from Northwest). There were no storms.
