June 2011

RAINFALL

The Geelong region’s rainfall in June ranged from 70% to 140% of normal. Urban Geelong received around 40 mm (average 42 mm) but the West Barwon dam recorded over 100% of normal. The new BoM Geelong Racecourse station only managed 32.8 mm for the month, but near the old site at Mt Duneed Airport the total was around 49 mm which is normal for that district in June. The Racecourse station being situated in Breakwater is very likely to produce different figures from the Airport, therefore comparisons with historical data will now be questionable.

TEMPERATURES

Temperature figures again will be different at the new site. The new site is more “urban” in nature despite being surrounded by some open land, and the Airport site was much more rural despite some small contamination from Surf Coast highway traffic. As such, until the final comparison figures are released from BoM, we would expect higher minimums by a degree or two at Breakwater and slightly lower winter maximums to be recorded, owing to the well-documented urban heatisland effect which has long been noted in Geelong. But any conclusions about exact trends in Geelong temperatures will have to wait for at least ten, and ideally, 30 years.

In fact, the June average daily minimum figure at Breakwater this year was 6.8 degrees C, and the maximum figure 14.9 degrees C. These figures are both higher than the long-termAirport averages, but a proper study of the surrounding district is as yet obviously inconclusive due to the changeover. Avalon Airport’s June temperatures wereabout 0.3 degree C cooler than their 1995-2010 June average.

OTHER FEATURES

Volcanic ash affected Victoria for the latter part of the month but did not seem to affect Geelong skies or temperatures except for a few higher than averageminimums in the final ten days. Snow fell on the Otways ridge on the 8th, and hail fell in Geelong on the 7th. There was one short-lived storm with lightning and thunder on the 7th, and there were 4 windy days with gusts over 60 kph
